Is It Time to Get Marriage-Whys?

This week in headlines, we heard that Mexico is introducing legislation that will potentially put time frames around marriage with the minimum contract lasting two years.

There are now approximately 26 countries throughout the world that recognize civil unions, domestic partnerships and same sex marriages.

While I see these nuptial changes as positive evolution, I feel that we still have a one-size-fits-all model for partnering in a culture that increasingly celebrates our differences. These newer proposals are simply time-limited and toned-down versions of the same thing...

Are Divorce and Affairs Contagious?

Submitted: Jun 03, 2011 @ 12:27 AM

It seems that the news has almost weekly reports of a famous couple who has experienced a breach in the marriage by one party or the other having extramarital relations. Today it's Arnold and Maria, last week it was Shania Twain's husband, before that Jesse James, Kelsey Grammar, John Edwards, David Letterman, Tiger Woods, Bill Clinton, etc., etc., etc. The list certainly seems endless. How NOT to Tell Your Spouse You Want Out

Submitted: Feb 19, 2011 @ 11:47 PM

Without question, the cruelest way you can tell your spouse you want out of the marriage is to never mention that you are unhappy and then, one day quite out of the blue say, "I'm not happy. I want a divorce."

On August 2nd, my best friend was hit by a car and killed. Bijoux was eight human years old (56 dog years). She was a 25 pound corgi/sheltie mix with the most amazing personality - the perfect mix of playful and calm, cute and smart. We shared a profound connection. I loved her more than anything on this earth. That's quite a statement, but it's true.

In these past two weeks, I have been amazed by the number of people who absolutely get the relationship that those of us who are animal lovers have with our pets. I've also been amazed by how many people really don't get it. One person...

Is Divorce Contagious? What This Study Doesn't Tell Us

James Fowler of University of California, San Diego, Nicholas Christakis of Harvard University and Rose McDermott of Brown University began studying divorce and social contagion one year ago. According to the numbers they culled, they have determined that indeed divorce is contagious.

These researchers determined that that when close friends break-up, the odds of a marital split increase by 75%. They also found that people who have divorced friends in their larger social circles are 147% more likely to get a divorce than people who have friends still married. People with divorced...
